How astrology compatibility actually works

Real astrological compatibility compares two whole birth charts, not two Sun signs. Astrologers call it synastry: they look at the angles between one person's planets and the other's, starting with the Moon, Venus and Mars.

Most compatibility charts you see online match Sun signs: Aries with Leo, Taurus with Virgo. It is an easy place to start, and it is also where most astrologers stop trusting the result. Two people are more than their Sun signs, and so is the way they fit.

Sun sign matching, and why it is only the surface

Sun sign compatibility usually works by element. Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) and air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) are said to feed each other; earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) and water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) are said to steady each other.

That can be a useful first read. But it compares one placement per person out of ten planets, twelve houses and the angles between them. Two Leos can have very different Moons, and that difference often decides more about daily life together than their shared Sun.

Synastry: laying one chart over another

The method astrologers use is called synastry. You place both birth charts side by side and look at how the planets of one person fall against the planets of the other.

What matters are the angles between them, called aspects:

  • Conjunction (0 degrees): two planets in the same place. Strong, for better or worse.
  • Trine (120 degrees) and sextile (60 degrees): easy flow. Things that work without effort.
  • Square (90 degrees) and opposition (180 degrees): friction. Attraction and challenge, the parts that ask both people to grow.

A relationship with only easy aspects can feel comfortable and a little flat. One with only hard aspects can feel electric and tiring. Most lasting connections have both.

The planets that matter most between two people

Not every planet weighs the same in a relationship. Astrologers usually read these first:

  1. The Moon shows emotional ease: whether you feel safe and understood around each other.
  2. Venus shows what each person finds beautiful and how they show affection.
  3. Mars shows desire, drive and how each of you handles conflict.
  4. Mercury shows how you talk, argue and make plans together.
  5. Saturn shows commitment and responsibility: what makes a connection last, and what can make it feel heavy.

A Moon that sits well with the other person's Moon or Sun is one of the most quoted signs of a relationship that feels like home.

Venus and Mars contacts are often read as chemistry. Moon and Saturn contacts are often read as staying power.

Friendship works the same way

Synastry is not only for romance. The same angles describe friends, roommates and coworkers. A Mercury trine between two friends can mean conversations that never run out; a Mars square between coworkers can mean sharp energy that needs a clear plan.

What compatibility can and can't tell you

Astrology describes tendencies, not outcomes. A difficult aspect does not mean a relationship will fail, and an easy one does not mean it will last. It gives two people a shared language for why some things feel easy between them and others take work.

This is the idea Dxstinity is built around: seeing where you and another person line up before you meet, and having something real to talk about when you do. To start, see your own Sun, Moon and Rising, or read what each of the big three means.

Questions people ask

What is synastry in astrology?

Synastry is the comparison of two birth charts. An astrologer looks at the angles between one person's planets and the other's to describe where the relationship flows easily and where it creates friction.

Is Sun sign compatibility accurate?

It is a starting point. Sun sign matching compares one placement per person, while a full comparison includes the Moon, Venus, Mars and the angles between all of them, which usually says more.

Which signs are most compatible?

Signs of the same element, or of complementary elements such as fire with air and earth with water, are traditionally seen as an easy match. A full chart comparison often changes that picture.
